Description
31 Monnow Street is a three-storey building with a rendered and painted front, likely over brick, and a Welsh slate roof with a rendered stack. It has a double depth plan and a rear extension. The front features three windows, with the ground floor showcasing a late 19th century or early 20th century shopfront that includes a central entrance and flanking 2-light display windows with an overlight. A large fascia conceals the cills of the first floor windows, which are plain, recessed sashes with 2 over 2 panes and stone cills. The roof is steeply pitched with a stack on the right gable, while the rear elevation has been altered.
Inside, the building retains beams with roll mouldings that suggest a date around 1600, along with 17th century chamfered beams featuring lamb's tongue stops. These beams were likely reused during the main early 18th century rebuild rather than being original to the structure. The lower floors have been extensively altered and are now combined with No. 33 as one shop, but the upper floor still has part of the early 18th century staircase, which includes two dog-leg flights, a closed string, closely spaced turned balusters, and a moulded handrail. Additionally, there are at least five early 18th century two-panel doors in the attic. The roof space displays a much renewed queen strut roof and what appears to be a reused upper cruck blade.
