Description
9 St. James' Street is a late 18th-century building, originally of double depth, with alterations and an addition in the 19th and 20th centuries. The exterior is constructed of red brick with floor bands, rendered and painted with a roughcast finish, and has a Welsh slate roof. The main facade has three storeys and two windows, set almost flush with the wall, featuring 1-over-1 pane sash windows with segmental arches on the upper floors, where the windows are smaller and flat-topped. A six-panel door is centrally positioned, with a transom light and a hood supported by brackets. The roof is plain, with narrow stacks on both gables. The rear elevation includes several 6-over-6 pane sash windows, and a two-storey wing with a hipped roof covered in pantiles and steel casement windows.
The interior has undergone significant alteration but retains a two-period staircase. The early 19th-century section features a stick baluster stair with a mahogany handrail, extending from the ground to the first floor. The early 18th-century section is a straight flight of closed string stairs to the second floor, with a square newel post, turned balusters with knops, and a moulded pine handrail. Several original two-panel doors are also retained.
