Description
Nos. 20 and 24 St. James' Street form a double-depth building with a central entrance, likely built in the 18th century. The front is finished with roughcast and painted, topped by a Welsh slate roof. The building is three storeys high and has five windows across the front, with a wider gap between bays 2 and 3 where a prominent stack is situated. A central doorway features a semi-circular head, a broken pediment, and fluted Doric columns, leading to a six-panel door. The windows are plain sash windows with 6 over 6 panes, with the second-floor windows having 3 over 6 panes; all have stone sills. A modillion eaves cornice runs along the top of the front elevation. The roof is plain, with a main stack between bays 2 and 3 and a smaller stack on the right-hand gable. A small window is visible in the right-hand gable. The rear elevation is not visible, as it is partly hidden by the adjacent building at No. 37 Whitecross Street.
Although addressed as both No. 20 and No. 24, the building appears to have only one entrance. The interior, which was recorded as having a stick baluster open-well staircase, has been converted for use as flats.
