Description

19 St. James' Street is a double-depth house dating from the 18th century. The building has a rough rendered and painted exterior, a Welsh slate roof, red brick and rendered stacks. It is three storeys high and has two bays. The main entrance is centrally located, with a secondary access to the rear on the left. The ground floor features a basket arch to a through passage on the left, with a four-panel door immediately to its right. The door has the two upper panels cut away and glazed, and it is topped by a rectangular fanlight with tracery beneath an architrave and flat hood on brackets. The right-hand ground-floor bay contains a tripartite sash window with 6 over 6 panes, flanked by 2 over 2 panes. The first floor has two French casements with 8 + 8 panes and overlights, each with a wrought iron balcony in front. Two sash windows with 4 over 8 panes are on the second floor. A modillion eaves cornice runs along the top of the building, and the roof has a low pitch with paired brick stacks on the right-hand wall. The rear elevation has replacement windows, except for the arched stair window in the centre. The interior was not inspected during a recent survey.
