Description
The Ice House located to the northwest of Bedwellty House is a single-storey building designed in a T-plan. It is constructed from randomly coursed local rubble with yellow brick detailing, including long quoins. The building features a slate roof with wide eaves. The northern range has a small brick chimney at the eastern end and a rebuilt yellow brick bellcote at the western end. The bell, which was cast at Tredegar Ironworks in 1837, was previously hung at a former school.
On the western end, there is a round-arched window opening with a boarded door. The northern door also has a round-arched head and is set in an iron frame, featuring a boarded door. The lower gabled southern wing has a south-facing round-arched window with altered glazing and contains the entry to the ice chamber.
Inside, the upper chamber has a simple stone-flagged floor and an opening in the centre that leads down to the ice chamber. There is a cast-iron fireplace present. The domed ice chamber is lined with yellow brick and tapers down towards a drain. Access to this chamber is provided via a tunnel, with the entrance being raised due to the ground level.
