Description
The Town Clock is a notable structure made entirely of cast iron, standing 70 feet (21.34 metres) high on a giant Tuscan column. It features a tall square base with moulded ribs that create geometrical compartments, with inscriptions in the central sections. The east side is inscribed with 'Chas Jordan, Iron Founder, Newport, Mon', while the south side reads: 'Presented to the town of Tredegar from the proceeds of a bazaar promoted by the late Mrs R.P. Davies. Erected 1858'. The west side displays a figure of the Duke of Wellington along with the words 'Wellington, England's hero'. The shaft of the column tapers and has two narrow bands, topped with a broad moulded capital. The large clock-case is made of iron and features cardinal faces with Roman numerals on the dials and decorative spandrels. An ogee roof crowns the clock, complete with a weathervane above. The clock is situated within a small square enclosure that has 20th-century walls and rails.
