Description
Capel Hengoed, also known as Hengoed Baptist Chapel, is a square chapel dating from the 19th century. It features a three-window gabled front with cement rendered elevations and a slate roof, although the chimney has been removed. The building follows the standard 19th-century plan but retains the paired front entrances typical of earlier long-walled chapels, rather than the central entrance leading to a lobby found in later designs. The chapel has round-headed horned sash windows with marginal intersecting glazing bars, along with an Italianate central two-light window. The two entrances on either side of the central ground floor window are square-headed and have modern boarding. A stone date plaque is located on the gable. The side elevations have horned 12-pane sash windows, with camber-headed windows for the gallery; the ground floor windows on the left side are blocked. The rear gable features a pair of square-headed two-light windows, which have recently been reopened and include pointed arched heads.
Inside, the chapel has a simple design with a raked gallery on three sides, supported by chamfered timber piers and featuring a panelled front. The ceiling is coved and boarded, with a central octagon design and a moulded cornice. The pews are made of boxed pitch pine. There is a panelled area for the set fawr, with steps on either side and an open-pedimented board behind it. Above this area are two memorial tablets, one dedicated to Rev John Jenkins (died 1853) and the other to Rev Richard Williams (died 1878), both of whom served as ministers at the chapel.
