Description

Salem Independent Chapel is an Independent chapel built in 1862, featuring a roughcast exterior with a 20th-century dry-dash finish on the front and a slate roof. The plain gable front includes two long arched windows and a central arched door, with a shorter arched window above. The windows are small-paned, equipped with marginal glazing bars and intersecting tracery in the heads, while the door fanlight mirrors the design of the window heads. The entrance has double doors and a date plaque in the gable. The side walls also have two long arched windows, and the rear of the building is windowless.

There is an attached whitewashed rubble stone outbuilding, which features two doors on the ground floor and outside steps to the left leading to a loft door, along with two loft windows. The stone voussoirs are present on the ground floor.

The chapel likely retains most of its original 1862 features, except for the pulpit, which may date from 1927. Much of the woodwork is grained, including dark graining on the pews. Inside, there is a three-sided gallery with curved corners, a coved stencilled underside, and long and short front panels supported by three plain iron columns. The great seat has a railed back, and the pulpit is accessed by steps on each side, featuring a simple arched-panel projecting pulpit front. A plaster arch with pilasters and ornate consoles enhances the interior, which has a flat ceiling divided by thin timber ribs. The entrance lobby includes a coloured-glass window leading into the chapel.
