Description

The building is an Independent Chapel, dating to the early 18th century with subsequent rebuilding and enlargement in 1777 and 1857, and renovations in 1911. A plaque indicates the dates of these phases. The chapel has a square plan and is faced with dry-dash cladding, with painted stone window heads. It has a hipped slate roof with flat eaves. The front elevation features two long, narrow arched windows with cut stone voussoirs and keystones to the arches, flanking a similar arched doorway with double, diagonally-boarded doors, likely of late 19th or early 20th century date. A fanlight and the window heads have Gothick-type intersecting tracery. To the left side, a two-storey range features two windows with 16-pane sashes and exposed stone voussoirs. The right side has a similar two-storey, two-window range, but without exposed window heads. The rear wall contains two long arched windows, similar to those on the front, with painted stone arches. The sills of these rear windows have been raised, and the windows have 4x6 panes. A late 19th century gabled vestry is attached to the left, partially obscuring the right window and constructed on two levels due to the slope of the ground. The vestry’s front gable has overhanging verges, a central 16-pane window, and a door to the right. A side wall features a central 16-pane window and a basement door to the left, while the right end gable has a 16-pane sash and a lean-to addition to the rear. Attached to the vestry is a terrace railing consisting of low iron rails, urn stanchions and an iron lamp standard at the far end, beyond a gate defined by two limestone pillars and a double iron gate with spearhead rails and dogbars.

The interior originally had plastered walls, but the plaster has been removed from the rear and side walls under the galleries. The interior features boarded dados and a three-sided gallery supported on five fluted cast-iron columns with Corinthian capitals. The gallery fronts have a bracket cornice and long horizontal panels. There are painted box pews, arranged in three blocks, with shaped bench ends and panel backs. Square enclosures surround the pulpit, which has a curved canted front with balusters and two arched panels with fretwork detail. Steps lead up to the pulpit, and a seat with armrests is positioned below it. A painted boarded ceiling completes the interior.
