Penallta Colliery Workshops

Penallta Colliery Workshops is a colliery workshop block designed to match the style of the other buildings in the main colliery complex. This long, two-storey gabled structure runs north to south, measuring approximately 90 meters long and 16 meters wide. It is constructed of Pennant sandstone with red brick dressings, which include pilasters that separate pairs of windows, end piers, stepped parapets, a plinth, and dentilled surrounds for the windows and doors, all featuring keystones.

The roof is made of steel and was originally covered with slates on the upper slope and glass below, but it has since been re-covered with corrugated material. The central ridge served as a raised ventilator and rooflight. The east side has 18 bays with tall segmental-arched windows that were once fitted with multi-pane metal frames, but these are now blocked. There are two large doorways and three smaller doors leading into different sections of the building, some of which previously had smaller windows above them.

The gable ends feature a three-window range and double-pitch gables that rise to the raised ridge. A series of small chimneys, including one at the west end for the smiths’ shop, are present. At the left (south) end, there is a low extension with a corrugated roof of uneven pitch.
