Description

Horeb Baptist Church is a chapel built in 1848, situated among a row of terraced cottages, with a vestry located behind it. The lateral facade features a central entrance, which is unusually prominent. The building is constructed from thin coursed local rubble stone and has a roof covered with clay plain tiles, along with two stone chimneys at the ends. The central entrance porch, which dates from the 20th century, is finished with 'spar' dashed render. On either side of the porch, there are two very tall arched windows, which are adorned with dressed stone voussoirs, imposts, and a keystone. The windows are made of timber and were also added in the 20th century. To the right of the facade, there is a wide boarded basement door that has a cambered head and stone voussoirs. The gable ends above the neighboring cottages are rendered, with one small window located towards the front on the right-hand end.

Inside, the church retains a compact layout, with the pulpit positioned on the rear wall. Behind the pulpit is a later broad panelled and glazed screen that includes a door leading to the vestry, topped by an arched ribbon featuring painted text. An organ was originally located in the position of the vestry screen. The interior showcases painted and grained joinery, with the pulpit and gallery being grained, while the pews are painted. The pulpit and great seat, dating from the late 19th century, feature ball-finial newels, with the great seat being panelled and the pulpit having a balustrade with a single flight of steps to the left.

The original box pews are arranged in three ranks, all facing the rear wall, and are panelled with a rounded top rail. There is a three-sided gallery with curved corners, supported by four plain iron columns, which is accessed by a single corner stair. The gallery is particularly deep at the rear and is steeply raked, featuring panelled benches. The front of the gallery is very simple, with a deep cornice below that has two long rectangular panels flanking a square panel, topped by a simple open stick-baluster rail. The sloping ceiling is a later addition, featuring plastered panels.
