Description
Nos 1-11 Alfred's Terrace in Taffs Well is a two-storey row of cottages built from rubble stone and topped with a slate roof. The range consists of five pairs of cottages (nos 2 to 11) and an additional cottage (no 1) with its entrance at the west end. Each pair shares a brick chimney stack with a cornice band. The cottages feature doorways topped with round arched brick heads, typically containing panelled doors with two-pane fan lights. Each cottage has a window on the left or right, with the windows on both storeys aligned. The lower storey windows have segmental brick heads, while the upper storey windows have cambered brick heads. The cottages primarily have deep 8-over-8-pane sash windows, mostly without horns, and with stone sills.
At the rear, the cottages include kitchen extensions set within yard boundary walls. Originally, they likely had a door and window on the lower storey. Each cottage has two upper storey sash windows similar to the front, but with segmental brick heads. Some have skylights on the rear roof pitch. Originally, each cottage had a room at the front and back, with the staircase located in the front room opposite the fireplace. Most cottages have been modernised, combining the front and rear rooms and adding a kitchen at the back.
No 11 features a planked door and horned sash windows, with the brick heads of the openings rendered. A taller house from around 1900 (no 12) is attached to the north gable end.
