Description
5 Alfred’s Terrace, Taffs Well, comprises a range of ten cottages and a further cottage, forming a two-storey grouping. The cottages date from the 18th century and are built of rubble stone with a slate roof. The ten cottages are arranged in five pairs (numbers 2 to 11), with a separate cottage at the west end (number 1). Each pair of cottages shares a brick stack featuring a cornice band. Each cottage has a doorway topped by a round brick arch, containing a panelled door and a two-pane fanlight. Each cottage has one window to the left or right, with windows on both storeys aligned. The lower-storey windows have segmental brick heads, while the upper-storey windows have cambered brick heads. The windows are generally deep 8-over-8-pane sashes, mostly without horn detailing, and have stone sills. At the rear, kitchen extensions have been added within the yard boundaries, and some roof skylights are visible. Originally, each cottage likely had a doorway and window to the lower storey. The upper storey of each cottage has two sashes, matching the front elevation in their segmental brick heads. Internally, the original layout included a front and rear room, with the staircase positioned opposite the fireplace in the front room. Most of the cottages have been modernised, with the front and rear rooms combined into one large space and a kitchen added to the rear.
