Description

Ardwell Cottage comprises a range of cottages built in the 18th century, located at Nos. 1-11 Alfred’s Terrace, Taffs Well. The terrace initially consisted of five pairs of cottages (Nos. 2 to 11), plus a single cottage (No. 1) with an entrance at the western end. The cottages are constructed of rubble stone with slate roofs. Each pair of cottages shares a brick stack with a decorative cornice band. Each cottage has a doorway with a round-arched brick head, containing a panelled door and a two-pane fanlight.

The cottages have one window to the left or right, with windows on each storey aligned. The ground floor windows have segmental brick heads, while the upper floor windows have cambered brick heads. They feature deep eight-over-eight pane sash windows, mostly without horns, with stone sills. At the rear, kitchen extensions have been added, situated within the boundaries of the yard walls. Originally, the cottages likely had a door and window on the ground floor. Each cottage has two sash windows on the upper floor, matching the front elevation, and also with segmental brick heads. Some skylights are present on the rear roof slope.

Originally, each cottage contained a front and rear room, with the staircase in the front room opposite the fireplace. Most have been modernised; the front and rear rooms combined, and a kitchen added to the rear.

Cottage No. 1 is a single-window design to both the front and rear, with a symmetrical three-window elevation. It is rendered and has a hipped roof. It has a central gabled porch with a doorway on the south side, accessed via a late 20th-century single-storey conservatory. The windows are metal-framed with flat heads, dating to the mid-20th century.
