Explosives store of former Llantrisant Colliery

The explosives store of the former Llantrisant Colliery is a Grade II listed building designed to minimize damage from potential explosions by being located away from the main colliery structures. This small, single-storey building is constructed of brick and reinforced concrete, featuring a vaulted roof and thick walls, which is typical for buildings of this type from its period. However, its reinforced concrete roof is unusual compared to the more common brick vaults. The store is set on a level platform that has been cut into the steep hillside, and its walls exhibit a pronounced batter. To protect against damp and frost, the entire exterior is rendered. At each end of the building, there is a tall window positioned high, along with small square ventilation holes around the structure. The east end features a steel door that hangs on iron hinges on the outside and includes screw holes for attaching timber paneling on the inside to prevent sparks, which is a rare feature for such doors to remain intact.
