Description
The Malthouse is a long, three-storey building constructed from rubble stone and topped with a slate roof. The central entrance features a doorway with a segmental stone head made of narrow voussoirs, leading to a boarded door. To the right of the entrance is a boarded window with a similar stone head, and between these two openings is a ventilation strip. On the left, there is a wider opening with a flat concrete lintel and double planked doors. In the middle storey, to the left of centre, is a planked door with a timber lintel under a segmental head of voussoirs. To the right, aligned with the ground floor opening, is a small boarded window with an almost flat head of voussoirs. The upper storey features three small boarded openings of irregular size and shape, all with stone sills, located just below the eaves.
On the north gable end, there is a doorway offset to the left leading into the middle storey, which has a planked door under a segmental head of stone voussoirs and is accessed by wide stone steps. To the right of this doorway is a large lean-to that projects to the rear, accompanied by a smaller concrete lean-to. There is also a blocked doorway into the east side at a high level. The rear of the building is only two storeys high due to the rising ground, featuring a catslide roof, a wide full-height opening to the left, and a small window in the centre. Additionally, there is an open-fronted shed at right angles to the right, facing north.
Adjoining the malthouse is a stone farmhouse to the left, which is two storeys high with three windows and a two-window range at right angles, featuring late 20th-century openings.
Partial access to the interior is available. The left bay on the ground floor has been converted into a garage. The middle storey, accessed from the rear, has a wood planked floor and cast iron I-section ceiling beams that support a flagstone floor in the attic storey. The attic is reported to retain some cast iron ventilation tiles and flues.
