Description
The statue of Dr. William Price is a Grade II listed monument depicting a standing male figure with outstretched arms, symbolically 'blown by the winds of adversity'. He is dressed as a druid, wearing a fox skin hat and cloak, with a sword at his hip. In his left hand, he holds a crescent moon, while a torch is in his right hand. The statue stands on a boulder that represents the Pontypridd rocking stone and faces East Caerlan. It is set within a circular brick base that has a flat top and a conical outer ring. On the eastern side, there is a slate panel that reads ‘Innovator of Modern Cremation’ alongside an image of a funeral pyre. Below this, it states ‘Dr William Price. 1800-1893. Surgeon Chartist. And. Self Style Druid. Sculptor Peter Nicholas. Supported by the Welsh Arts Council. Unveiled by the Mayor of Taff Ely, Councillor George Preston, 3rd May 1982. AP Isaac’.
