Description
The Pedestal and Statue of Lord Merthyr in Aberdare Park is a notable memorial featuring a pale grey granite square pedestal with a cornice that steps out to the base and is set on a square platform. Atop the pedestal stands a bronze statue of the bearded Lord Merthyr, who is depicted holding an unrolled parchment. A cloak is draped over a small pillar behind him, which also holds a book and a miner's lamp. The statue features inscriptions in both Welsh and English, although they are partly eroded. This statue is identical to an earlier statue of Lord Merthyr, who was then known as Sir W T Lewis, created by the same sculptor and located outside St Tydfil's Hospital in Merthyr.
