Description

The Former Ice Tower and Banqueting Hall is a round tower constructed from rubble stone, featuring embattled parapets and machicolations. It has a raised floor and an ice-house located in a semi-basement. The tower includes tall windows with stone dressings and trefoiled heads on the northwest, southeast, and southwest sides. There is a matching doorway on the northeast side, which is accessed by exterior stone steps set within stone retaining walls that have concrete copings and metal handrails. Above this doorway, there is a square-headed corbelled tablet with a recess beneath a segmental arch made of voussoirs. Attached to this recessed area is a circular grey stone plaque displaying a coat of arms.

To the west, there is a low masonry projection with a flat slate-covered roof that also adjoins the exterior north wall of the gardens. An open ironwork gate under a segmental arch at the west end provides access to the ice-house.

Inside the former banqueting hall, which has been restored, there is a flagstone floor, a boarded ceiling, and walls that are rendered and plastered. The ice-house can be viewed from the gate, and steps lead down to a passage that has rebates for a door halfway along. At the end of this passage, two steps rise to the ice chamber, which features a domed roof and a deep pit.
