Description

The site comprises a series of four square, aligned east-west gardens enclosed within a common boundary wall. These are a Victorian kitchen garden, a fruit garden, a plant hunters' garden, and a Tudor garden, working from west to east. The central two gardens are separated by a hedge, while the others are divided by walls. Openings through the ends of the walls and the hedge allow access along the length of the gardens. The boundary wall is constructed of rubble stone with an embattled parapet.

The westernmost garden formerly contained heated glass houses along the north wall, supporting vines. This wall is faced with yellow brick, incorporating a design in red brick, and is supported by four masonry piers. Low brick foundations survive in front of the wall, and brick cold frames are aligned with the west wall, separated by a low stone wall. A small pond in the southern part of the garden likely relates to a former water culvert in the northwest corner. The exterior west wall has been disturbed by the former presence of stables. The north section of the wall is double skinned, with blocked door and window openings. Doorways are situated at each end of the wall, sheltered by pointed arched sandstone lintels and containing boarded doors. A blocked doorway with a dressed stone archway is present in the south wall. A high terrace and associated walls rise towards the location of the main house.

The dividing wall between the western and west-central gardens is of yellow brick with red brick coping. It is constructed in sections, terminating in pilasters that step down to the south, following the natural ground slope. Pointed arched doorways are located at each end, slightly projecting and with raised copings.

The east-central and eastern gardens are separated by a wall with an embattled parapet, likely originally masonry, which is rendered to the south and supported by buttresses, and lined with yellow brick to the north. A doorway with a segmental arch, hoodmould, and chamfered stone reveals is situated on the south side. There are blocked pointed arched openings to the south of centre and to the north. A raised terrace, now in poor condition, runs along the south side of the east-central garden, accessed by steps at the eastern end and buttressed at intervals. A building is integrated into the south boundary wall of this garden.

The east wall of the eastern garden has a pointed arched doorway to the exterior at the south end. A blocked doorway to the exterior is located at the east end of the south wall. Raised terraces are present on both the south and north sides of the garden, reached by stone steps in the centre and at both ends. The steps vary in design but feature flat stone copings. A small structure, open to the front and with a red-tiled hipped roof, sits within the centre of the south terrace, butting the exterior wall. The structure is supported on timber posts resting on a low masonry plinth, and has a brick floor. The interior is three-bay, with the wide central bay accessed by a step.
