Description
Seamouth Cottage is a two-unit cottage dating from the 18th century, featuring one and a half storeys. It is constructed of rubble masonry and topped with a thatched roof that includes eyebrow dormers at the front. The cottage has rubble masonry end stacks and small lean-tos on the gable ends. The front of the building faces east, while the rear is built into a steep bank.
The entrance is through a half-lit panelled front door located towards the left side. There are two-light wooden casement windows with horizontal glazing bars and early glass; one is positioned to the right of the door and another above it. The right half of the cottage mirrors this design, but the original door has been blocked and replaced with a similar window. Additionally, there is a small light to the left of the front door and another in the southern lean-to. The northern lean-to is set back and features a window similar to those on the front, along with a small light on its northern side. The rear of the cottage was not accessible, but it is reported to have a blocked window with a lintel.
Inside, the living room is directly accessible from the front door. It contains a modern fireplace located at the south gable end, although the fireplace wall is said to be nearly 2 meters thick. There are stone fireplace stairs in the southwest corner leading up seven steps. The ceiling features square joists, and the upper storey has floorboards above. The floor is made of concrete. Beyond the south gable end is a 20th-century lean-to kitchen. A planked door in the cross wall leads into the northern unit, which has a wooden floor and a modern fireplace. While there is no access to the upper storey, it is reported to have pine floorboards at window sill level, substantial roof timbers, and panels of plaited thatch in the apex of the truss.
