Description
The Maesteg Sports Centre, known as The Cornstores, is a 19th-century building constructed from Pennant Sandstone and topped with a hipped slate roof. It has a rectangular shape with the entrance located at the narrower northern end. The walls are approximately 1 meter thick and rise three stories, marked by string courses at the sill level. Some stone blocks are tightly fitted together and integrated with lead.
The lower level features six 9-paned windows, while the taller second level has two pairs of 9-paned windows with round heads, each pair recessed under 3-centred ashlar stone arches. A few of the original cast iron windows remain. The top level includes six round-headed paned windows that extend to the ends of the building. At the northern end, there are two well-designed lean-to glazed porches added in 1983, situated between original wing walls.
Inside, the entire space is open to the roof and includes a thick cross wall, which has been restored, that supports a large engine beam. There are double cast iron pockets with spreader plates embedded in the walls to accommodate machinery. Some of the original flooring has been relaid in the southern part of the building.
