Description
The Blast Furnace at Maesteg Sports Centre is a Grade II listed structure built of rubble stone and faced with Pennant Sandstone ashlar work. It has a square plan that encloses a circular furnace, featuring three blowing arches located at the rear and sides, and a casting arch at the front. Originally, the stack rose as a tapered square cone, approximately 14 meters (46 feet) high, leading to a charging ramp that was accessed from the higher land to the south. Each of the arches is made of ashlar and tapers inwards. The casting arch still retains the tap hole and has a cinder notch for slag positioned to one side. The throat of the furnace was blocked during consolidation work in 1995, and the upper section of the stack has been destroyed.
