Description
The Iron bridge over the River Llynfi is a Grade II* listed structure. It features two side castings made of slightly cambered plate measuring 430mm by 50mm thick, supported by arched braces. These span between continuous cast iron bearings built into each vertical ashlar stone abutment, which are designed to accommodate thermal movement. The bridge deck is supported by two intermediate 'T'-beams that are 30cm deep and slightly fish-bellied, carrying rebated iron planks that are approximately 350mm wide, resulting in a total width of 3.13m. The outer frames and T-beams are held apart by two round section iron tie bars. The handrails, which are now made of steel rod, are arranged in three bays on slender square stanchions topped with knop finials, and they are believed to replicate the original ladder design. The fish-bellied beams and iron planks are similar to those supplied by the company for the Duffryn, Llynvi and Porthcawl Railway, established in 1825.
