Description
Zoar Chapel is a small-scale building constructed from rock-faced stone with limestone dressings, topped by a slate roof featuring arcaded terracotta ridges. The main front is asymmetrical and gabled, showcasing a moulded doorway with a boarded door and overlight. Above the doorway, the upper section intrudes into an arcade of blind cinquefoil arches, flanked by a tall square tower on the left and an octagonal stair turret on the right. Above a string course, there is a prominent 7-light window, supported by thin buttresses that rise to small finials above the gable. The window features cusped flowing tracery of delicate construction, and a large stone cross is positioned on the gable. An inset panel at the apex of the gable is inscribed with the date AD 1911. The front extends by one bay beyond the right turret, which includes a side door with a blind traceried tympanum and a 3-light window above it. The tower is adorned with slightly tapered buttresses, a doorway at the front, a 3-light window above, and a tall upper lantern stage featuring twin 2-light Perpendicular openings on each face, topped with a small slated spire and finial. The nave consists of two bays, along with a cross wing of two bays. At the northeast end, there is a lean-to roof covering the original presbytery and schoolroom, which is set transversely, and it features two levels of 2-light traceried windows. The interior has been subdivided and ceiled.
