Description
16 Old Market Street is a mid-19th century, two-storey building with a three-window front. It features regular stonework laid in narrow courses and has a plinth. The roof is moderately pitched and covered with slate, with brick stacks, one of which merges with the adjoining stack of No. 15. The eaves are plain.
On the first floor, there are sash windows with sidelights, although the sidelights were removed at the time of inspection. The windows have slightly cambered stone voussoirs, plain reveals, and stone sills. There is a similar window on the ground floor to the left.
In the center and to the right, there are paired mid-19th century shop fronts. The shop windows in the middle have doors at the outer ends, separated by plain pilasters. The shop fronts have simple blind boxes, with the windows consisting of four lights and transoms; the doors are half glazed with deep rectangular fanlights. The shop front of No. 16 is modern.
The building was undergoing restoration at the time of inspection on July 28, 1988.
