Description
22 Great Oak Street is a mid-19th century building that features a front added to an earlier timber-framed structure. It is two stories high and has a façade with two windows on the left and three on the right, all covered in scribed stucco and supported by an overall cill band plinth. The building has a slate roof with bracket eaves. The windows are 12-pane sashes with flush frames, although some have been altered by the removal of glazing bars from the lower sashes. The Victorian doorcases include 6-panel doors; the door for No 22 has a bracket cornice, while No 23 features Ionic columns, a plain entablature, and a cornice.
No 24 has a broad Victorian shop front with shop windows on either side of a central splayed entrance leading to double half-glazed doors. This shop front is adorned with a toothed entablature that has end finials, fluted brackets, and pilasters. To the right, there is a cambered carriage entry with voussoirs, leading to a cobbled drive that has boarded side walls and a 6-panel door within a classical doorcase at the rear end.
The rear of the building has been modernized following the removal of the timber framing. No 22 features an off-axis brick extension with a weaving loft-type second floor and 3-light multipane casement windows on the first floor. The brick gable end retains some slate hanging. The eastern side of the building overlooks the courtyard behind Nos 17 to 21.
