Description

The Stable Range at Dolaucothi Farm is a Grade II listed building constructed from rubble with a slate roof, featuring wooden soffits and barge-boards. It has a long, two-storey elevation with 12 bays and uneven window placement. The right-hand seven bays belong to the earlier section and include a central projecting gabled bay. The central bay has a nine-pane upper window with a cambered stone voussoired head, flanked by three smaller nine-pane windows on the left, with similar heads. The right window is inserted and has a brick head. There are two similar windows to the right of the central bay, with the left retaining its cambered stone voussoired head.

The ground floor of the projecting bay features a wide round-arched cart entry with stone voussoirs and paired planked doors with strap hinges. To the right, there is a divided boarded door with a cambered stone voussoired head, followed by two nine-pane windows with similar heads. Two more similar windows are located to the left of the central bay, along with a divided boarded door on the extreme left, which also has a similar head. The five left-hand bays are of a later date, featuring three upper nine-pane windows with brick cambered heads. There is a boarded door on the ground floor to the left, with a similar head, and two windows to the right that match.

To the right, there are paired cart entries with brick round-arched heads, square dressed stone piers, and paired planked doors with branching strap hinges. A wrought-iron weather-vane is positioned over the front gable.

The right end has two inserted 20th-century windows, while the left end features a boarded loft door with a cambered brick head and a 20th-century metal stair. There is a similar loft door on the left at the end of an added outshut, which has a loop below to the left. A full-length later rear outshut has four left bays that have been much remodelled and extended. The next three bays are concealed behind a corrugated-iron lean-to, which hides three two-light casement windows with cast-iron latticed glazing and cambered brick heads. A 20th-century corrugated shelter is located to the right.

Although not inspected, it appears that the original triplet of stalls in the left stables of the older portion includes ramped rails to planked partitions and curved metal hay-baskets. Above the entry to each stall, there is a timber panel with a curved soffit, creating an arcade-like appearance. The roof structure consists of 13 pairs of king-post trusses with angle struts.
