Description

Napier House is a tall town house built in the early 19th century, constructed from squared rubble and red brick, topped with a pyramidal slate roof and flanked by yellow brick stacks. The building is three storeys high and features a two-window range. The front is made of rubble stone and includes two full-height recesses with recessed walling in red brick and arched heads also in red brick.

On the first floor, there are long 12-pane sash windows with cambered brick heads and slate sills. The upper floor has 6-pane sash windows with segmentally arched heads that follow the line of the arches of the recesses. The ground floor has a large tripartite sash window to the right, consisting of 4-12-4 panes set in a reeded frame. To the left, there is a doorway with an arched head and reeded frame, featuring a 9-panel door made of moulded and flush panels, along with a radiating-bar fanlight above. The entrance is sheltered by a 20th-century arched glass and timber porch with an open front. The house has a painted stone plinth.

Inside, there is an early 19th-century staircase with an open scrolled string and straight balusters. The entrance hall features a doorway with a reeded architrave and 9-panelled doors, with similar doorways leading to the first floor landing. The fireplaces throughout the house also have reeded architraves and plain mantle shelves.
