Description
1 George Street is a wide, two-storey and attic, five-bay Victorian classical building that was originally constructed as the George Hotel, likely in the 18th century. The building features a hipped roof, which has mostly been stripped as of December 1988, with tiled ridges and three gabled dormers that have trefoil openings. It has tall masonry stacks with classical cornices, with a pair of stacks located to the left over the side gable, which includes a low, three-light cusped traceried window towards the rear.
The facade is rendered and includes painted pediments and linked hoods with fluted keyblocks above the windows. The windows have bracket sills and linking bands, with sashes that feature marginal glazing bars. The building has a rusticated plinth and a banded doorway surround that includes a fluted keyblock and pilasters. The entrance features double doors and sidelights that lead up steps, topped by a segmental traceried fanlight.
At the rear, the plan form is essentially a wide L-shape, which has been partly infilled. This range has a massive two-storey hipped stone slate roof and large masonry stacks, similar to those at the front. The rear also features three gabled dormers with trefoil openings and asymmetrical 12-pane Georgian sashes. There is an arched and traceried fanlight next to a later glazed porch.
At the time of inspection in December 1989, the building was noted to be in poor condition.
