Description

The Old Bank is a two-storey building with a basement, featuring a three-window front that is covered in colourwashed render and showcases heavy classical detailing on the ground floor. The slate roof extends over the eaves and is contiguous with the adjacent building to the right. The upper floor has tall four-pane sash windows set in plain reveals, complete with painted sills and scalloped hood moulds. The bank's three-bay pilastered frontage is topped with an overall entablature, and the frieze and aprons have rusticated panels with rusticated key blocks. There is an original letter-box located in the bottom rail of the left-hand plate-glass window. The entrance is marked by double three-panel doors that feature rusticated panels and embossed surrounds, with steps leading up to the entrance.

Inside, the building retains an exceptionally well-preserved banking hall and vaults, which likely date from 1889, as indicated by an inscription at the basement entry reading "D R Davies, April 1889." The interior boasts a low relief coffered ceiling with a heavily undervent foliage cornice, barred windows, and an internal porch with etched glazing. Notable fittings include panelled splays with architraves, rubble chimney-pieces, and a tiled floor. The original long mahogany desks, which have been repositioned, include cupboards and provide access to the basement via stone steps. There are three parallel brick vaults connected by a cross-passage that retains a short length of ecclesiastical Gothic screenwork and a door with a grille supplied by "Milners; Safe Co Ltd, London and Liverpool." The inner safe door is stamped "Conwyn Ching and Co, London." Access to the vaults is through a large strongroom door, and the passageway still features the ecclesiastical Gothic screen. The upper floors also display good detailing, particularly in the first-floor front room, which has an undervent foliage cornice and a rose.
