Description

The building is a bank, constructed in the late 19th century, and located in St David’s. It appears to have been originally designed as a pair of houses, known as Dewi House and New House, as shown in a photograph taken after 1912. At that time, they had a stone front, a pedimented central doorway, and a shop front for Owen's Fancy Repository on the left. Lloyd’s Bank opened in St David’s in 1891, initially in temporary accommodation, becoming the first bank to establish an office in the city.

The bank’s front is painted stucco over a rubble stone core, with a low-pitched slate roof and rendered end stacks. The main facade is two storeys high, originally featuring three 12-pane sash windows. The ground floor has been altered, with two narrow 12-pane sashes to the left and a projecting, painted stucco bank front extending across the centre and right. A canted entrance occupies the space of the original front door and two-window range on the right. Leaded top lights are present above these windows. The openings are framed by pilasters with moulded caps and bases, and pendant labels to the necks. Channelled rustication decorates the areas flanking the openings, and raised aprons sit below the windows. A plinth breaks forward under the pilasters. An entablature runs above the ground floor, topped by a balustraded parapet with coped pedestals that correspond to the pilasters below. These pedestals themselves have plinths, caps, and pendant label blocks. A single bay with similar detailing is present on the west return. Two rear wings are visible, along with a pointed stair light between them.
