Description
1 High Street is a mid to late 19th century house and shop constructed from rubble stone, featuring a slate roof that was grouted in 1981, along with large stone end stacks. The building has a two-storey front with three windows, which includes 12-pane sash windows above, accented by purple stone voussoirs, although the centre window's voussoirs have been replaced, and slate sills.
On the ground floor, there is a round-arched door located to the right of centre, which has a painted rendered head and reveals, along with a modern half-glazed door and an original traceried fanlight. To the left, the shopfront is set beneath an exceptionally broad purple stone head that is slightly cambered. The shopfront itself is from the mid-20th century, featuring a recessed centre door flanked by windows with stained glass top lights. Historical photographs indicate that there were large 9-paned windows on either side of the shop door.
To the right, there is an early 20th-century canted bay window set on a stone base, with sash windows and a moulded cornice. The rear of the building includes a pointed stair-light with intersecting glazing bars, a two-storey northwest rear wing, and various modern additions, notably a flat-roofed imitation stone structure to the left of the main front.
At the northwest rear, there is a low rubble outbuilding with a slate roof, which is said to have been a smithy.
