Description

Menai is a substantial detached house dating from the mid-19th century. It is constructed of rusticated, unpainted stucco over a rubble stone base, with a roof of small green slates and modern dormers. Large stone stacks are located at each end of the building. The two-story, three-window front features twelve-pane sash windows on the upper floor, set within narrow, moulded architraves with moulded sills and bracketed sills. The ground floor has a fine, pedimented doorcase flanked by fluted Doric half-columns, containing a 20th-century six-panel door and an original traceried overlight with panelled reveals. To the right of the door is a twelve-pane sash window with a full, moulded architrave and cornice resting on consoles. To the left is a 19th-century shop window of three lights, one narrower, possibly originally a doorway; it has rounded heads with coloured glass and glazing bars. A fascia and cornice runs between ornate brackets. The end walls are roughcast.

The front garden is enclosed by a low stone wall topped with slate coping and spearhead iron railings, including a matching gate. A yard to the west is enclosed by a high rubble stone wall that curves towards Nun Street, with stone gate piers topped with acorn finials. At the rear is a single-story, L-shaped range of outbuildings.
