Description

The Court House is a pair of early 19th century houses arranged in an L-plan that enclose two sides of a northwest front garden. The buildings are constructed from colourwashed rubble stone and feature concrete plain tile roofs, rising to two storeys.

No 19 has a wing that projects towards the street, topped with a hipped roof and a brick stack on the east side. The end wall facing the street includes a 12-pane sash window positioned off-centre, flanked by painted brick sides, and a large 3-pane shop window below, which previously had pilasters, a fascia, and a cornice (as of 1981). To the right is a round-headed doorway with a painted brick arch and a half-glazed door, though the fanlight above is blocked. There is a lean-to against the east wall featuring a 20th-century six-panel door at the north end and a 9-pane casement window above it. The west side facing the garden has two ground floor 12-pane sash windows with painted brick heads and one 9-pane window in the centre above, also with a similar head. At the rear of the wing, there is a range that runs at right angles, continuing from No 20, although its front wall is obscured by the wing, it has stone end stacks.

No 20 is set back in the garden and has a three-window front with stone end stacks. It features four-pane sash windows and a central six-panel door, which has four fielded panels and two glazed panels. The stone porch has a grouted slate hipped roof.

The front garden is enclosed by low colourwashed rubble walls that include a central gateway. Additionally, against the front wall facing the street, there is a fine 19th-century Gothic painted stone barometer case, which is now listed separately.
