Description

The Court House is a pair of early 19th century houses arranged in an L-plan, enclosing two sides of a northwest front garden. The buildings are constructed from colourwashed rubble stone and topped with concrete plain tile roofs, standing two storeys high.

No 19 features a wing that projects towards the street, topped with a hipped roof and a brick stack on the eastern side. The end wall facing the street has an off-centre 12-pane sash window above, flanked by painted brick sides, and a large 3-pane shop window below that was formerly adorned (in 1981) with pilasters, a fascia, and a cornice. To the right, there is a round-headed doorway with a painted brick arch and a half-glazed door, though the fanlight above is blocked. A lean-to structure against the eastern wall has a 20th-century 6-panel door at the northern end and a 9-pane casement window above it. The western side, facing the garden, has two ground floor 12-pane sashes with painted brick heads and a single 9-pane window above, also with a similar head. At the rear of the wing, there is a range that runs at right angles, continuing from No 20, with its front wall obscured by the wing but featuring stone end stacks.

No 20 is set back in the garden and has a three-window front with stone end stacks. It includes 4-pane sash windows and a central 6-panel door with four fielded panels and two glazed panels. A stone porch with a grouted slate hipped roof enhances the entrance.

The front garden is enclosed by low colourwashed rubble walls with a central gateway. Additionally, against the front wall facing the street, there is a fine 19th-century Gothic painted stone barometer case, which is now listed separately.
