Description
The Smithy House, also known as Yr Hen Efail, is a Grade II listed house and attached smithy constructed from rubble stone with slate eaves roofs. It is a one and a half storey, double-fronted house located to the left of a lower, single-storey L-plan former forge.
The house features stone end stacks with dripstones, 16-pane sash windows that are horned on the upper floor, and a central door set within a 20th-century porch. The lower openings have stone voussoirs and slate sills, while the upper windows break the eaves under small pedimental-gabled dormers that have slate-hung sides, resembling the dormers on Holly Lodge in Llanafan. At the rear right, there is a single-storey wing with a pair of casement windows on the right side, two vent loops on the left side of the south wall, and a lean-to structure on the end wall.
A straight joint between the house and the smithy indicates that the smithy is likely older, as the upper floor of the house overlaps it. The smithy has a broad door situated between two broad windows, all featuring stone voussoirs. It includes four-light casement windows with original wooden board shutters that have iron strap hinges, as well as a plank stable door. A large corniced stone chimney is located on the rear wall. The crosswing to the right has a large inserted cart-shed entry on the south side wall, which is fitted with double board doors and a cemented lintel. The east end wall displays overhanging verges, a fixed square 20-pane window with stone voussoirs and sill, and another window with stone voussoirs in the right side wall.
The property was not inspected at the time of the survey.
