Description
This limekiln, located to the southwest of Old Castle Farm, is built from coursed, tooled blue lias stone and dates from the 18th century. It is large in scale and integrated into the bank, featuring a three-sided, near-square plan. The east and west faces have tall kiln-eyes that reach nearly to full height; these kiln-eyes are triangular in shape above straight lower jambs and lead to small ground-level openings into the main crucible. The main crucible itself is circular, tapering outward from the base to the top, which is grassed and has low parapet walls that remain on the west and south sides. This limekiln is notable for its unusual size and quality, and it is one of the few remaining examples with the crucible still open.
