Description
The SE range of the farm court at Monachty is a 19th-century farm building, likely designed for loose boxes, milking, and calving pens.
The exterior features rubble stone construction with a broad slate roof that overhangs at the west end. It is a large single-storey structure with eight bays. The south front includes a sequence of openings: a casement window, a door, a pair of casement windows, two doors, another pair of casement windows, and two small cambered-headed iron ventilator lights. The doors have overlights, and the windows are fitted with boarded shutters. Stone voussoirs are present above the openings. The west end has a similar central door with a window to the right, while the east end features one window facing the road. The north front, which faces the yard, is built from a different stone and consists of seven bays with doors and windows arranged in the sequence WWDWDWD, also featuring stone voussoirs.
Inside, there is a high seven-bay roof supported by king-post and queen strut tie-beam trusses, with stone walls dividing the space up to the tie-beam level. The eastern section contains a large room with grooved brick floors and two rows of ties, likely used for milking. The remainder of the interior is divided by a spine wall into northern and southern spaces. The southern section has a central room with flat tiles on the floor, and the southwest room is further divided by a plank partition. The northern section features a long central stable with loose boxes on either side of the passage, and the northwest room has a cobbled floor.
This building is an unusual example of Victorian farm architecture, notable for its integrated management of milking and calving. It holds group value with the other exceptional farmyard buildings at Monachty.
