Description

This is a mid-19th century outbuilding on the south side of the farmyard at Monachty, incorporating a central section that was converted from an 18th century barn. The 1843 Tithe Map suggests a range existed at this location.

The building is constructed of rubble stone with slate roofs and consists of a main range and a lower, added section at the east end. The main range appears to be composed of the original barn with altered openings, and a section to the west where the roof was raised in the early 19th century to match the barn’s height. The former barn section has a narrowed doorway with stone voussoirs, an inserted window with stone voussoirs, and a small loft light above. There are two outer vent loops under the eaves, with blocked, similar loops on the ground floor. Further to the right, a 12-pane window sits within a tall former doorway, with a cambered-headed door, both featuring stone voussoirs. An enlarged loft opening sits above the window. The final section to the right has a visible straight joint at first-floor level. This section has a ground-floor window, a door with an overlight, and a window (apparently in a former door opening), all with stone voussoirs, plus one loft light above the door. External stone steps lead to the loft. The rear of the main range shows signs of significant alterations to the stonework. Four casement-pair loft lights are set under the eaves. A southeastern gabled wing has been added, with its west side substantially rebuilt in brick.

The eastern end of the main range has a lower range with a door leading to a through passage, and a loft light above. The extreme right of this range is windowless facing the yard. The south side, facing a service drive, features three ground-floor open bays with heavy, flat timber lintels. Loft lights are positioned to the left of centre and to the left, the left one being smaller. A blocked loading door is visible in the east end wall.

The interior of the main range contains altered cart-horse stables on the ground floor and two long, five-bay lofts above. The western loft retains markings of a lower gable line at each end, along with bolted collar trusses. The second loft features oak collar trusses with side-pegged scarfed wall posts. Within the added eastern range, two tiers of blocked vent loops from the original east gable are still visible.

This is a well-preserved traditional farm building featuring scarfed roof trusses dating from the later 18th century and which forms part of an exceptional group of buildings at Monachty.
