Description
The gates and railings at South Lodge are early 19th century features, likely from the 1830s, originally created for Colonel A.T.J. Gwynne. Although the lodge and drive do not appear on the 1843 Tithe Map, this may be an oversight.
The structure consists of two square piers that are whitewashed and stuccoed, topped with two-step stone caps and pineapple finials. There are low quadrant-curved walls, also whitewashed and stuccoed, with ashlar coping and thin spearhead railings. Small outer piers made of stucco have flat caps. The double iron gates are designed to ramp down to meet a stile, featuring curved strengthening bars and a latticed mid-rail, along with spearhead rails and dog-bars.
These gates and railings have group value with South Lodge, marking the entrance to Monachty, a significant country house in the area.
