Description
South Lodge is an early 19th-century entrance lodge to Monachty, built in a similar neo-classical style to the south front of the house. It was probably constructed around 1830 to 1835, although it is not marked on the 1843 Tithe Map, which may be an error.
The lodge features colourwashed stucco and a slate hipped roof with deep eaves and brackets, along with a whitewashed stuccoed ridge stack. It is a single-storey, double-fronted building with raised angle strips and an eaves band. There are 12-pane sash windows on each side of a 20th-century door with an overlight. The right side wall is similarly outlined with raised strips and has no windows, while the left side has a 4-8-4-pane tripartite sash window.
This lodge is a fine example of Regency style and serves as a gate-lodge to a significant country house in the area.
