Description

This is a mid-19th century farmhouse with associated farm buildings arranged around a courtyard. The farmhouse is a symmetrical, two-storey, three-bay structure, built in a plain classical style, with a single-storey, U-shaped arrangement of farm buildings extending from its centre. To the right (east) side of the farmhouse are former cart sheds and stalls, while to the left (west) side are a cow shed and grain store.

The farmhouse is constructed of stugged grey and cream sandstone ashlar with polished dressings. It features a base course, an eaves course, plain window margins, and long and short quoins. The main (south) elevation has a later, centrally positioned, pilastered and corniced porch with a replacement two-leaf timber-panelled door. A window is positioned above the door at the first floor. There are windows at each floor in each bay, flanking the porch. A single-storey section, slightly recessed, extends to the outer left and right. The right-hand section has a boarded door with a flanking window, while the left-hand section has three replacement doors, the central one being larger. The rear (north) elevation is irregularly fenestrated with a two-storey, pitched-roofed addition from the centre and a regularly piended, single-storey wing to the outer left. The windows are generally 12-pane timber sash and case, with various timber sash and case windows to the rear. The roof is grey slate, with slate to the rear additions, and has ashlar coped gablehead stacks to the east and west, along with ashlar skews and cast-iron rainwater goods. The interior of the farmhouse was not inspected in 1997.

The farm building ranges are constructed of snecked sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings. The east range, containing the cart shed and stalls, has a five-bay courtyard elevation, with a sliding boarded door in the centre bay. There are two segmental, former cart arches to the outer right, now with replacement modern roll-up garage doors. A window is situated in the bay to the left of the centre, and a sliding boarded door is in the bay to the outer right. Internally, the east range has an open-beam timber-framed roof. Stalls run along the left side of the range, and the right side has been converted into a garage.

The west range, housing the cow shed, has a three-bay courtyard elevation. It features a large sliding boarded door in the bay to the left of the centre, a boarded door in the bay to the right of the centre, and a sliding door in the bay to the outer right. The exterior consists of a harled wall with a grain store opening set high in the centre. Internally, the west range has an open-beam timber-framed roof and stone cow stalls with iron awban poles and hay hecks. The roofs are grey slate with evenly-spaced 2-pane flush roof lights, with ashlar skews to the east range and cast-iron rainwater goods.

A later sandstone rubble wall with a ridged ashlar cope and a square-plan ashlar pier with a shallow pyramidal cap projects at right angles from the east range, enclosing the courtyard from the road.
