Description

Auldton is an earlier-mid 19th century farmhouse complex with later additions and alterations, situated on Millburn Road, Dalserf. The main farmhouse is a two-storey, four-bay, rectangular building with a castellated entrance porch at the centre. It is harled with ashlar dressings, featuring a base course and strip quoins. The principal, south-facing elevation has a three-bay porch with a replacement part-glazed architraved door flanked by windows, and a window above at the first floor. Non-aligned windows are present at each floor in the remaining bays. The north-facing elevation, which looks onto the courtyard, is irregularly fenestrated and includes a crowstepped projection and a single-storey, piended addition. The windows are 12-pane timber sash and case styles, with hopper replacements in the porch. The roof is grey slate, with ashlar coped stacks to the west and along the ridge, and a replaced harled stack to the east. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also present. The interior of the farmhouse was not inspected in 1997.

To the east of the farmhouse is a crowstepped building forming a cowshed range, projecting northwards and creating one angle of the courtyard. A further L-shaped range to the northwest incorporates a former cartshed and later brick stables, forming the other side of the courtyard. A gateway leads into the farmyard, flanked by crowstepped-gabled ranges to the southwest.

The gateway itself is a round-arched structure of channelled cream sandstone ashlar, with free capitals and triglyphs above on the west side. A square-plan bellcote with an ogee roof sits above the gateway. The rear of the gateway is constructed of plain sandstone rubble. To the south, a rectangular snecked rubble shed has ashlar dressings and droved crowsteps, along with long and short quoins. A blocked window with a circular opening above is visible on the west elevation. A boarded doorway with a window on either side is on the south elevation. The roof is grey slate with scrolled skewputts. The interior was not inspected in 1997.

The range to the north of the courtyard is similarly built, with a door and two flanking windows on its north elevation. This range contains an open-beam timber roof and timber framed partitions within.

The free-standing, gable-ended cowshed forming the east range of the courtyard is constructed of cream sandstone rubble with stugged ashlar dressings. Its courtyard elevation is largely blank, with a blocked doorway and one open doorway on the right, and ventilation holes along the remainder. A window is positioned centrally on the external elevation, with a boarded door to the left and a blocked window to the right. A modern roof covering and ashlar skews to the north complete the exterior.

The cartshed and stable range, built of cream sandstone rubble with an integrated brick stable range at a right angle, sits to the north. Its courtyard elevation showcases two segmental, former cart arches near the internal angle, a window to the right, and a wide, square-headed doorway to the outer right. The western range has irregular stable doors and window openings. The roof is grey slate with 2-pane flush roof lights and ashlar skews to the east end, with cast-iron rainwater goods.
