Description

Demesne Farmhouse and attached farmbuildings and garden walls date to approximately 1800, with minor alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The farmhouse is constructed of coursed, herringbone tooled sandstone with ashlar dressings, and has slate roofs. The north range has a replaced corrugated asbestos roof. Two gable stacks are present, one of stone and the other rebuilt in brick. The coped gables have kneelers.

The farmhouse is two storeys and has a garret, with three windows facing south. The central doorway has an original door and a four-light narrow overlight, flanked by single 16-pane glazing bar sashes. Above these are three similar sashes. Set-back single-storey wings adjoin the farmbuildings to the rear. The north front features a central panelled door with a later wooden porch, flanked by single 16-pane glazing bar sashes. To the left of the door is an inserted 20th-century window. Above is a tall round-headed glazing bar sash, flanked by single 16-pane glazing bar sashes. The return gables have small, plain sashes to the garret. All openings have painted lintels.

The farmbuildings are arranged around a long, rectangular courtyard to the rear of the farmhouse, situated on a sloping site. The west range originally comprised a stable, a horse engine house with lofts above, and a barn; the dividing walls have since been removed to form a single barn. The east range, facing the courtyard, has a raised access terrace, four plank doors, three shuttered windows, and four shuttered loft openings. The north range has a central segment-headed carriage arch flanked by loose boxes and cartsheds with lofts over. The south courtyard front has a single plank door flanking an archway, with single shuttered loft doors between and a pigeoncote with a triple entrance and flight perch over the archway. The outer, north front has a central archway flanked by similar arches with double plank doors; the door to the right is higher with two shuttered loft doors. The east range includes two byres, one with a loft over, a cartshed now converted to two pigsties, and a smithy now a boil house. The west courtyard front on the south side has a double door and a window to the former smithy, two doorways to pigsties, a single plank door with a loft door above to a small byre, and a single plank door flanked by single loft doors to a large byre.

The garden walls, which enclose the garden to the south of the farmhouse, are attached sandstone walls with ashlar coping, and include a central gateway with an original iron gate.

This is a fine example of a planned estate farmhouse and farmbuildings, constructed in the early 19th century, a period when new ideas and farming techniques were revolutionising farm planning and design.
