Description
The pigsty located to the south-west of The Cottage was built in 1891 for John Warren Barry, with Matt. Harb as the mason. It is a large structure designed in a Classical/Egyptian temple style, constructed from coursed squared sandstone, concrete, and timber, with a roof that is now felted. The building features a stone basement with two projecting buttress-plinths and plain side entrances. Above, there is a hexstyle portico supported by timber quasi-Ionic columns set on stone bases. This portico holds an entablature with a reeded frieze, a mutulated cornice, and a wooden pediment topped with an acroterion. The tympanum of the pediment has the remains of a trophy of arms. The frieze and cornice extend around the building, culminating in a similar pediment at the rear. The walls of the internal cella are made of concrete and have panelled doors. The sides of the building feature battered windows and rainwater heads adorned with palmette decoration. It is said to contain all possible modern conveniences for four pigs, but the interior was inaccessible during the survey.
