Description
West Lodge, probably designed by David Bryce and dated 1861, serves as a 2-storey lodge with a raised basement to the rear, built in an asymmetrical 3-bay Gothic style. It features crowstepped gables, with a gabled bay added to the outer left, and a 3-light bowed window to the right. An integrated gateway is incorporated, with a square-plan machicolation tower to the left and a corbelled circular-plan angle tower to the right; a bridge adjoining the lodge is listed separately.
The lodge is constructed from polished cream sandstone ashlar, with stugged sandstone used for the addition. Architectural details include a base course, a stepped string course that acts as a hood mould over the door and window to the right, stepped hood moulds over the gateway openings, and cornices to each tower flanking the gateway. Openings have roll-moulded surrounds, plain to the addition, with aproned cills.
The west (principal) elevation features a recessed bay in the centre with a replacement, part-glazed, timber panelled door. Two closely-spaced windows are at each floor within the gabled addition to the outer left. A bowed window with a single window and ball finial is set within the gablehead above the bay to the right.
The gateway on the outer right has a moulded, corbelled round-arched opening, featuring a deeply carved armorial plaque depicting a seated dog above a shield, with the inscription 'AYE READY' and a rope twist border below a curvilinear parapet between the flanking towers. A window at ground level is found within the tower to the left, with a blocked round-arched opening to the south. A machicolated parapet sits above. The circular tower to the right incorporates machicolated corbels and gun loops below a blocked narrow window to the west and south, surmounted by a conical roof and ball finial.
The east (rear) elevation shows a replacement boarded door at basement level in a recessed bay. A window is placed above this. Two windows, closely disposed, are set at each floor within the gabled bay to the outer left. A moulded, corbelled 3-light bow oriel window is located at ground level in the bay to the left of centre, with a window and gablehead stack above. A blocked shouldered doorway is present at ground level to the square tower, above which strapwork initials ‘JH’ can be seen. A narrow stair window is situated above the doorway, while a corbelled angle tower, featuring a slit window to the northwest, has a conical roof and ball finial. Similar detailing to the gateway is present, including a deeply carved shield and date panel to the parapet. Round-arched cast-iron double gates complete the composition.
The lodge has small-pane timber-framed hopper windows, a grey slate roof, slate to the corbelled angle towers, ashlar coped stacks, and replacement uPVC rainwater goods.
