Description
Tabernacle Baptist Chapel is a building constructed in 1812, featuring colourwashed stucco and a slate eaves roof. The lateral facade includes two long arched windows, outer doors, and upper gallery lights that were completely remodeled in a classical style in 1931. It has a channelled high plinth up to the sill level, with three pilasters that frame the main windows. These pilasters have moulded bases, fluted lower halves, a festooned mid-panel, and plain upper halves, lacking capitals. A full entablature extends through the eaves to a modillioned pediment, which displays a shield plaque reading 'Tabernacle B 1812'. The arched windows are tall and small-paned, featuring eared architraves and elongated triple keystones. The outer bays have double 3-panel doors that are recessed under pediments supported by consoles that rise from the main sill course. The design includes angle channelled pilasters and round gallery lights with apron pendants and elongated triple keystones, along with bracketted eaves. The end walls are fitted with 16-pane sash windows on each floor. At the rear, there is a two-storey range with two 16-pane sash windows and two added lean-to outbuildings.
Inside, the lower pews have been removed, revealing a five-sided panel-fronted gallery from the early 19th century, supported by four plain iron columns. The panelled pulpit features curved angles, fluted pilasters, and steps on either side, along with a great seat that has a balustraded back.
