Description

Bethel Baptist Chapel is a building from around the mid-19th century, possibly dating to 1831. It features unpainted roughcast walls with unpainted stucco dressings, all dating from 1955, and a slate roof with a metal ventilator. The small lateral facade includes two cambered-headed 12-pane sash windows set in stucco surrounds with keyblocks, with a date plaque positioned between them. The outer doors are also cambered-headed, surrounded by stucco with keyblocks, and have pebble dash inserts on either side. The entrance has double 2-panel doors and channelled angle piers. The end walls contain small first-floor 9-pane sash windows, while the rear has a 20th-century red brick lean-to that is two storeys high.

Inside, the chapel has a three-sided ceiling that slopes towards the back and front. A three-sided gallery is supported by three reeded wooden marbled columns, with the gallery front curving at the angles and featuring a deep marbled cornice beneath a row of vertical panels and a central round clock panel. The interior also includes painted grained box pews arranged in three blocks along the rear wall, with a small block to the right of the pulpit. The great seat is plain with canted ends, and the pulpit has steps on each side, curved angles, and blind balustrading with a curving top rail. Gallery stairs are located at the rear corners, with lobbies in the front corners.
