Description

Bwlchgwynt Chapel is a large chapel built in 1774, with later alterations in 1809 and 1833, and a gallery added in 1865. The building features an unpainted stucco facade and rubble stone side walls, with slate hanging on the rear and south side, and a slate roof supported by paired brackets at the eaves.

The front of the chapel has heavy rusticated surrounds framing six arched openings, which include two central windows and two outer gallery windows above two doors. These windows have late 19th-century Y-tracery glazing, while the doors feature intersecting Gothic glazing bars in the fanlights and 20th-century panelled doors. Above the two central windows is an arch-headed plaque inscribed with details about the chapel's history and biblical reference.

The end walls are two-storey with two-window elevations, showcasing sashes with marginal glazing bars. The north end is made of rubble stone with stone voussoirs and a blank window in the gable, while the south end is slate-hung. The rear has a similar slate-hung three-window range.

Inside, the chapel boasts a fine interior filled with densely packed box-pews, which are panelled with painted graining and roll-moulded top rails. The pew blocks are raked back towards the rear and curved at the front, following the line of a similarly curved great seat. There are small blocks of pews on either side of the pulpit, which has a curved front supported by consoles under the lectern. The gallery from 1865 is three-sided, featuring brackets to the lower cornice, seven iron columns, and a front composed of long panels with arched sections between pilasters. The angles are curved, and the seating is raked.
